Salt With Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never use salt unless a good reason. If I have a bacterial worry I use melafix. water change every week, fin level, or around 85 percent on all 4 tanks.

I try to do two 50% water changes a week but no less than at least one 50% WC a week. IN addition to alturnate filter cleannings which is also very important. As far as salt goes, I would be more inclined to maybe use a small amount with Africans or CA's but not with most of the SA's especially if tey are wild cought or from som of the softer more acidic waters of SA. I would never use it for as example scaless fish, Uaru, Discus, WC Scalare or Altums et al.

Yup also do 50 percent every week :), I trust with my current fish salt is fine ?

I do about 50% per month and just stock accordingly. Also I don't have any tanks without either plants or corals. The plants help maintain the water quality and the corals are excellent indicators of water quality.

And you HAD to mention altums didn't you :P
I just lost the 2 I had in quarantine :(

Also, if you don't want to dose the tank then salt water dips/baths are often a viable option.

And as for the type of salt, I have used API (FW only), solar salt (very cheap), and a variety of marine aquarium salt brands. They should all be fine with your fish depending on what SA cichlids you have. As stated, you may want to go easy with fish like discus (I do with mine), but things like green terrors will be fine. And some discus are tough too! All of the ones around here are bred in pH 7-7.8 and are more tolerant of a lot of things than their wild counterparts.

Fish are malawis, 2 jack dempsies, 1 red devil, 2 parrot fish, 1 oscar, 2 Lemon barbs (I know they are not a cichlid :p ) and the others im unsure as to there exact name but i know they are south american cichlids.

Out of curiosity how often do you guys do a water change ?

I do a water change when the water evaporates to a certain line (because of how dry the air is here)
Usually once a week.

People online are all about the water changes but I have kept tropical fish for 13 years and I honestly just do a waterchange when I feel like it needs one, and I have never had any fish die from poor water quality. They have always flourished and bred for me. Every tank is different, you kinda know after a while how often each tank needsa waterchange and how much to take.

Do you have a pic of your lemon barbs : I would love to own some, I am currently growing out two cigar sharks for my 225.

Sure :) if you go to this link you can see them :) http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?562283-My-Tank
Video of them as well in the link :)

When I add salt, I use Morton's Canning and Pickling salt. It is fine crystals of pure NaCl, no anticaking additives or iodide. $1.69 for a 4 lb box of it at the grocery store. I know nobody likes spending more than they have too.
