Diatoms are completely normal. Its part of cycling a new tank. I've had it and everybody I know has had it. Its really nothing to worry about unless your params are really out of whack. It'll usually go away. Just hope you never get cyanobacteria. Now that stuff is BAD

Oh and also just scrub it off and stir up where it is on the sand. Get rid of it as much as possible and eventually it'll stop showing up

no its 5ppm, judging by the pictures does it look like diatoms or am i mis-labeling it?

I get alage growth like this every now and then, I do a water change and scrub and it goes away for awhile. It happens. For me I think lately because I leave the light on more as I now have more coral that require the light. I got it once in a blue moon before that also. If the water is fine just keep scrubbing it. Tearing it down isn't going to help you.

ok, not sure if this would help but the tank is drilled for a closed loop but siliconed closed. if i opened those up and hooked up a canister filter would that prolong these outbreaks or is it not worth the time effort and $

I don't think that would be worth it to do a canister. You should be fine if you just keep up on the water changes, and scrub and net the algae frequently. I agree that it should subside. It also could be that the algae is harboring the nitrates and phosphates in your tank so that they don't show up in testing too. So scrub away.

If you really wanted to do something drastic, I would undo the hole that is siliconed and put in something that would increase water volume and filtration like a refugium instead of a canister.
