Saltwater Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does anybody have experience keeping saltwater catfish?

you can get them almost anywhere!!! :) columbian sharks lol. sold in fresh but need to be gradually changed over to salt as they grow. I know what you are getting at though. I have always wanted to set up a large SW just for different types of saltwater catfish. :) Giant hardhead ocean cats would be sweet! They get massive though. You might try Planet Catfish and ask around. Some real cat nuts there I'm sure someone probably specializes in salt cats.

This is a fresh water forum, AFAIK. There is a salt water MFK section. As for Planet Catfish, the datasheets for each fish specify keepers (if any). You can PM them.

Oh my bad. I already posted it under the SW section a while ago but I didn't get any helpful info. Nobody has them. Although I don't see any sign that says 'freshwater'. Ill check planet catfish though thanks.

Right. If talking about the "Forum" page, it appears to be only obvious from having SW in its own section and from the long list of sub-forums dedicated to the FW fish listed.

These are some i've caught in saltwater. cool fish. my favorite ones are the sail cats(aka gaff top catfish, to me they look like a smaller paroon shark) and the other one i believe is a hard head catfish(i don't know the actual name but thats what I've called them. and the other one is unidentified by me. all would be cool to have though. Not to mention they're all pretty good eating. but last summer i was out fishing and caught an 8" sail cat and though it would be pretty sweet to have in a huge salt water aquarium.

I agree with necro. I think all catfish aficionados dream of making their way into saltwater cats. And of course the Jordani cat is generally the first that comes to mind. Most of these saltwater cats come from the family Plotosidae or eel tail catfish. Aside from the Jordani catfish i have found a member of this family to be the next most common for saltwater cats in my area. Plotosus lineatus is a schooling fish when young so you'll often find them in groups at your LFS though generally as they get older this social behavior fades and your large group will need to be trimmed to reduce fighting. Ive never seen an adult in person, only the juveniles in the 3" range.
