Just wondering, Do you think it would be possible to create flowerhorns that can tolerate full strength salt water by breeding them to species that can tolerate salt? I know there are a few species(like blackbelts, mayans and I believe haitians, I don't know of others) that have been found out miles in the ocean and even breeding.

It is probably possible. I have seen videos on youtube of flowerhorns being kept in saltwater and brackish tanks... of course this eventually would lead to liver & other organ failure...

how would you test the salt tolerance though? Would you raise the salinity until they start to die then keep the healthiest ones? This would be the best and quickest way to do so, even though some would consider it monstorous. You may not even need to outcross. Just kill thousands of fry and breed the ones that survive. Sounds kind of ridiculous, but this is how it would have to be done.

I've always wondered if you could do the same to make a cichlid into a coldwater fish. Thats crazy that they found them that far in the ocean. I wonder what made them go out there and how tough do they compare to saltwater fsh?
