Saltwater newbie seeking advice

THe clown trigger will get to big for a 55g but a frogfish would be awesome. How about an octopus like a bimac?

the biger sump you have the better, you want the most circluation you can get. You will also need a syphon box to get the water to the sump unless your tank is drilled. I would also recomend triggers, your tank will get small fast with saltwater fish, a 55 is the smallest tank I recomend for saltwater. remember the biger the tank the easer it is. (also the more $$$)

Is it true that triggers will decimate a tank, regardless of their hunger.
Not true.

I wouldn't reccommend "plants" for beginners. I believe you are talking about corals and anemones. They need really expensive high output lighting. Aggressive, wierd fish are usually hardy, but most need huge tanks. I like the frogfish idea but they will eat anything and I mean anything that will fit inrto their mouth. How about a dwarf lionfish? They are really cool, but be careful what you put with it, because they will eat small fish. Octopi and seahorses are hard too keep and usually require a species only tank. My best advice would be to read and see what you like, buy live rock and a good skimmer, and go from there. In the end it is all about what you like.

I'd have to suggest a lionfish- they're not too unusual, but they aren't too hard to keep either. And you can keep others with them(just not small enough to be eaten- they're also reef safe if you ever decide to go that route.(they won't eat corals, just small fish, and the dwarves don't get too big)And for a more in depth reading for beginners, I'd suggest Bob Fenner's "Conscientious Marine Aquarist"
