I want to start a freshater tank it is about 20 gallons. I kno not big. But it was a freshwater tank for a little while. What i was wondering was if anyone could tell me everything i need for a 20 gal. saltwater tank to start. Also what would the best type of fish be to start it with? Thank you for the help.

get a neon goby ,2 occerless clown fish, a coral gobie, and a yellowbellie damselfish.

damsel would be the best fish for it.

alot of the setup depends on the fish you want to keep. but you need saltwater, liverock, a hob filter would probably be fine for light stocking. heavy stocking would need a protein skimmer(this is really recommend with any stocking but not necessary with light stocking, read reviews as some skimmers suck).

stocking saltwater is not the same as stocking freshwater, its been a while since i done salt but a saltwater tank can probably support 1/3 the stocking of a freshwater tank.

You can fit a reef in a 20 gallon if your up to the challenge, But for now i would stay away from coral. Just get some live rock and some fish like damels, gobys, etc. and let it run
