20 gallon's is fine for a reef I remember one time as a experiment I kept a small octocoral in a 2.5 gallon aquarium for over a year to base the need's of water quality fluctuation's in a small environment with an octocoral. Just read, ask question's and take your time with your decision's.

Ok and how long should i wait till i get fish? also what should i get to test the water?

1)As long as it takes for the ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites to all spike and zero out. about 3-4 days after they zero out you can start adding small fish.

2)any marine master test kit should do. pretty much just needs to have: Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites, pH, Phosphorus. Calcium and Kalkwasser are good to but Irarly find myself using them to be honest.

And i say this on every newbie thread, You will need a Hydrometer or Refractometer. I Highly suggest a Refractometer over the Hydrometer. Although they are way more expensive, they are alot more acurate and alot more reliable. :headbang2

so i just set my tank up today. the only things i need that i forgot to get was a hydrometer and tests. i will eventually get a protein skimmer but there is one problem that i am not really sure about. i have sand on the bottom and when i put the water in it became very cloudy. it has been sitting for a couple hours and it is still cloudy. is this normal and if so how long will it take to settlle down and clear up? i thought it was just the sand being mixed around.

the cloudiness should go away in 24 hours

the cloudiness is starting to go away it is alot better but still a little cloudy. i have another problem though. my salinity is way to high. how do i lower it? do i just do a little water change but use r/o water instead of regular water?

Get a tank and keep nothing but rocks (live) for at least a few weeks. A couple months would be better. While doing so, get educated.

Lower the salinity of your mixed water change water...this will slowly bring it down....

tank out some water and replace it with RO till you get it to your desired salinity and add your buffer for the PH and your good.
