I agree. They're only a plancton trap and everything rots in there. No canister filter in sw.
Another useful link.
A fuge also provides good filtration. A fuge is another tank where you grow algee.
fuge = refugarium?
Welcome to MFK Personifer.
I have seen several people post good results with canisters in FOWLR tanks.

Cannisters are just good for flow.Not for salt water filtration. Cannister filters are enclosed systems.They create no oxygen.They circulate alot of water,but for salt water they are not very good.

Thanks guppy, very kind of you!
Fuge is short for refugium.
Maybe in FOWLR, but the results don't come from filters, probably because of skimmer or high quality live rock. But in tanks with corals (SPS) a canister filter is not a good idea.

I always tell the people that I help get into saltwater aquariums is to do your research on keeping the salt tanks and use that as a guide. What works for some might not work for others. I personally have 4 salt tanks and have found that solutions to problems varies with the tanks. Do your research before you start your tank, it will save a lot of headaches and money in the long run.
