Saltwater vs Freshwater Tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some corals will reproduce once they mature.Make certain your water parameters and lighting is on point and in the meantime research and decide which species you like.

If your experience with aquariums, and doing water chemistry testing is limited,
you may first want to start with a tank of hardy salt water fish, containing live sand and rock.
Corals can very sensitive, and after you've had a stable salt water set up under your belt for a while, adding corals as you gain knowledge might be more satisfying.
With corals light, current, and water chemistry stability is especially important.

How much coral should I buy at first? Will it reproduce? How do I place the live rock in the aquarium? Sorry about all of these questions guys... lol

You shouldn't buy any coral at first, what for your tank to cycle and establish. You can speed this up with good established live rock and sand. Take it one step at a time. For live rock just place it in your tank and arrange it. There isn't a set amount of coral you should buy, just keep placing coral in until you are satisfied. You might have some issues with coral fighting with each other if they are to close. That is just trial and error.

Coral reproduction method depends on the type of coral. Some will bud, split, drop branches and some you will just have to snap a piece off.

If you want a almost instant reef get a "package" from Tampa Bay Saltwater rock. The rock will have coral, sponges, Coraline and other organisms. People have found octopuses and fish in their rock. If you Google the Tampa Bay Live Rocks there are a bunch of threads showing off what people have gotten. The 55 gallon package is pretty large. To save money you can get a 30 gallon package. If you decide you want to add more rock get some dry rock.

Thx for all this help guys! Would an octopus destroy the tank an eat everything up? It would be an awesome addition, but I don't feel like buying one and having it destroy my tank. Also are Arrow Crabs aggressive? My buddy had one in his tank and it pretty much killed his fish for sport lol.
Planned Livestock:
1x Fuzzy Dwarf Lion
1x Saddle Puffer
1x Snowflake Eel
5x Azure Damsels
1x Octopus
3x Blue Reef Chromis
40 lbs of live rock
And some coral
----------
Is that overstock? Are they comparable? And also we managed to up our budget to about 650...

Lo
I tried a reef rank once and while extremely beautiful and mesmerizing, i hated the maintenence! Absolutely hated it.
lol. My in laws have a rather large reef tank (I think something like 500G) and have professionals do it lol. It's amazing though.

I read more on the Octopus. No way lol. I redid my dimensions on the tank and came to find out that it's 60G instead.
