just curious as to how many of you saltwater buffs do partial water changes? If so how much and how often?

I have a 125 gallon SW tank in my den and when i was "into" it i did 30 gallon waterchanges every 6 weeks or so. I'd just mix up a 30 gallon garbage can of salt water, let it sit a day or two, heat it up to 78 degrees with a 300 watt heater and suck out 30 gallons and pump it back in. Very simple.I grew a french angle from the size of a quarter to a full grown pie plate in about 5 years and will confess at one point i went 2 years without a water change. Yup 2 years :WHOA: Everyone did fine and the only reason i did one was because i had to move the tank. I then bought a 265 gallon tank for the basement and made that a reef tank. mostly corals and a few small fish. 6 years and i never did a water change. Everything was doing great but i lost interest and converted it to freshwater. Back to my 125.....I dont overfeed and have a ton of live rock. I've had the same fish in that tank for over 10 years and have had great luck....Water changes or not :D

The lady that gave me her salt tank said, she hasnt added salt or did a water change in over 2 years. I couldn't believe it.
I usually top off the water every week and then completely change the water once every month to 6 weeks.

ok.. seems to be the same around most saltwater keepers opinions. I was talking with a guy at work who had several saltwater tanks, and said he didn't like freshwater, cause you have to do water changes and I was like what? Said 1 tank is going on 3 years no changes, just top off. and another one almost 1 year no changes just top off, and never lost a single fish... only thing he ever even really checks is salinity...

In my opinion if you get an established tank, and the fish in there have really adapted. They can probably handle no water changes. It just depends on what kind of fish you are getting into and what size. I just got a passer angelfish and Ihave done a 10 gallon water change and a 5 gallon water change just this week to make sure that water quality is perfect, and the little dude is doing great.

i try to do a 25 gal water change at lest every 2 weeks as i have a lot of big fish that poop tons. i do this to try and keep nitrates down.

The problem with topping off is sometimes people will purposely let the water level get down so that they may add more freshwater which is not very smart because when the water level drops then the salanity goes up and so do the ammonias and algea growth. That is why it is smarter to do a small water change every week instead of just topping it off.

Your all missing one of the main reasons for water changes in saltwater which is to top up the supply of minerals in the water. Water changes are needed for proper coral growth. But then with the number of products for sale now to top up these minerals i guess water changes technically arent needed as long as your willing to buy those products instead.

what no water change in 2 years? thats just crazy..trace elements alone need to be refreshed i remember when the first wet dry came out ..THEY said you never have to do water changes that was proving to be wrong ,then again i always did ask myself who the HELL is this THEY person anyway.... i do 1/3 water changes once a month on some of my tanks ..i have a few tanks i change one gallon a day on each of them tanks are one hundred gallons

i neeed to add LAZY people should not own tanks ...and they them self should not be aloud to breed
