saltwater water changes

You forget that you can buy mineral supplements, which work just as well as what comes in the salt mixes so I would disagree that that is a main reason for doing a water change. Main reasons for doing a water change are to remove ammonia, nitrates, nitrite, and other harsh elements such as copper and iron.

mineral supplements do not carry all that lost ...do what works for you best

I'm not saying don't do water changes, I am a steadfast believer that water changes are necessary for life in the marine aquarium. I am just saying high ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites are going to kill your animals before a lack of trace elements or an other element that makes up .00000000000001 percent of the equation in salt mixes.

high ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites will not accrue with proper changes and proper filtration ,and that was not the question asked

I agree, I do mine 25% once a week.

I agreed with the post that water changes are essential to remove undesirables, but you should also add trace elements and calcium. Water changes are free and easy, buying new fish isn't.
