Salvini and Geophagus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well Salvini went to LFS. I have A. Heckelii and a candy stripe pleco, seems so empty. Btw I am not seeing that A. Heckelii reach 13" I'm reading max size of 6-8".

Take info on fish with a grain of salt. Many profiles of fish are written by people who have kept them, but they may have ended up with a stunted fish, a smaller of whichever gender is smaller (usually female), or have raised the fish on a poor diet so that the fish never reached its true potential (technically I guess that is stunted). Anyways, I would trust the members of forums a lot more often than I would profiles.

And female heckelii get to be 6-8" on average with males in the 8-10" range usually.

It's about two inches, if that. Really cool, sifts the sand and I like fish that aren't so common. I have no problem having one fish (well two with pleco) My mean JD was in there all by himself.

I bought three at that size in February and they are about 4" now, my 2-3 year old was about the same size and is 6-7". You couldn't probably get away with a few more in the 55 for a year but an upgrade will be inevitable.

Agreed. More threadfins is okay, but it would need to be a total of 4 or more to deal with the conspecifics. I would recommend getting some other slow growing SA cichlids that would be okay with your heckelii. A small 1.5-2.5" severum, festivum or acara would be great. All slow-medium growth rate cichlids that would last for a long while in the 55 and give plenty of time to upgrade.

In my mind I was hoping to have the Threadfin as a centerpiece and a firemouth and/or Blue Acara and not have to upgrade but if I have awhile I guess that okay. He/she seems really happy right now :)

Well I traded in the heckelii for a Firemouth and a Blue Acara. The idea of having to upgrade and having a fish I probably shouldn't was stressing me out, I tend to obsess and worry a lot :irked: Would these fish (with the Pleco) be okay for life? And thank you for all the help, I'm not trying to be annoying just respect your experience, LFS and google have led me astray too many times.

Definitely not annoying. And yes, those fish will be fine in a 55 for life. :)
