Salvini cichlid tankmates?

If the salvini is a female, try a male Texas. For some strange reason when I had my male Texas, the female salvini always stayed with my Texas and it could of been a potential breeding pair.

my male salvini, seems to know his place, the larger synspilum lets him know, maybe a fish twice the size of yours could work, also maybe a few dithers

I still say try a Texas, also ponce recommended a Cuban, which is a good idea too. Those Cuban's are a beast at 3 inches or more and will not take crap from any other cichlid that tries to mess with him or her.I have a Cuban in my 125 gallon that is about 3 in half inches and this little Cuban is prepared to show who is boss.

I've had mine with several other species (from festae to severum) with little to no issues. Just give em a cave and they won't bother anyone...

They can be nasty sometimes tho

Honestly might be better to put in dither fish he might not think of as threats to his territory. A 55g isen't that big, even for a salvi. My pair claimed a side for them selves, and took out the 3rd before I could get him out. This was in a 125g with a 13" Midas keeping the peace. I have platties in the tank and they might chase them away, but can't really focus on one since I have a good schoal of them. Perhaps trying the same with some colorful dither now before s/he gets too large would be a good idea. I would forget putting other cichlids that it will have to be territorial with, because ones that get too large for a salvini t handle would be too big for your 55g. They are pretty much a mini Umbee. Colorful, full of teeth, and once they set there sights and know they got another fish's number they are relentless.
