Salvini's are beautiful CA cichlids for sure.
Females are smaller and more colorful,males in my opinion are not great community tank companions as they can be quite pushy.
I had a particular male that became undoubtedly the most aggressive and disruptive cichlid I've ever kept.

My male is colorful, just not as much red on the belly as a female. Wanna see a nice one, look at bastardfish's... I have mine in my sig and he's not mean at all. My midas is the boss of the tank.
I think male salvinis cause the least trouble when they are the smallest fish in the tank, but that's just IME . . . females seem to be decent enough community cichlids (again, IME)
personally i prefer the reds on the female however some males have nice blue patterning to compete with the females.
i had a 6" male breeding with my 4" female in my 7x2x2.5 and when they breed they literally claimed half the tank. other fish in the tank included jaguar. taxes, JD, cuban and trimac
