They do hide a lot, and their slender bodies fit into tight crevices. If you get one you may rarely see it for the first few weeks, especially with the big Oscar in there. They are cool fish, but frustrate some owners with hiding too much. Once they feel more confident and start swimming around you will see they are a colorful addition to your cichlid collection.

They are beautiful cichlids IMO. The stories of them shredding and nipping fins have kept me away from them though. I would love to have a pair one day. I just don't like tattered fins on my fish.

They are vicious but if they are kept with larger fish ( as long as they are not large enough to eat the salvini) they are usually pretty nice. Nice meaning they can't do damage to the bigger guys but they still try. My sal attacks my FH and JD but they quickly put the sal in his/her place. To the OP, I say try it. But be careful. Oscars can eat quite large fish if they want to. It might work perfectly, it might end in disaster.

that is an awesome price. At the chain stores around me, they are $45
WTF

at the local fish store, they are like $10-15 from the same supplier as the chain stores haha

Really? I was in Petco the other day and they had Salvini's priced at $2.29 and were about 3".

In the cities I've both lived in and kept cichlids in (Pittsburgh, Omaha, San Diego, and Dayton), they have always been dirt cheap and fairly common. Not as common as Jack Dempseys, Convicts, Firemouths and Oscars, but pretty darn common.

Well,I grabbed the Salvini today,I am sure the Salvini is gonna get into a fight with my black convict, but that black convict took on both my smaller Jack Dempseys like nothing. So I'm sure she will put the sal into his/her place lol.Lost, this is the first time ever getting my hands onto a Salvini,so I had to jump on the deal,I still ended up spending under 4 dollars regardless on a fish, that would easily cost more for not being as common here

Does anyone have a Salvini?I spotted one at Pet Supplies Plus for under 4 dollars 2 inches long, should I go for the deal on this Salvini,it will be put into the 125 gallon fish tank, with the rest of my Cichlids, which is the tiger oscar, jack dempsey, black convict, green terror, severum, firemouth.

Salvini's aren't serial killers, they are nest stealers. They don't substrate dig they find an exsisting nest and take it by force. After that they pretty much just defend it against anything. They don't start the fights usually but usually won't back down. Male Salvinis are big little fish with visiblely large teeth for their size, they get tall and robust much more so than FM's and far quicker than Con's.

Although the water volume and length of the tank may work while theses fish are smaller, the future isn't as bright. Basically your gonna have several species of cichlids pinned to the surface trying to stay out of the others way. Meanwhile the ones who've won the bottom fight over territory invasions and take pop shots at the surface cichlids on their way back home.
