Hi all,

Not sure if this interest anyone, but came as a bit of a shock and dissapointment.

The H. deppi pair were doing fine, but i decided to move them into the other 300g tank. After a week the male lost he's bond with the female and started courting my female salvini instead, she was quite willing.

A couple of days ago the salvini and deppi spawned, so as you can imagine i was very dissapointed. It's strange how these things happen.

I've since moved and destroyed the eggs now, as i personaly think its the most responsible thing to do, but what next?

Hopefully if i move the pair again, perhaps in a seperate tank, maybe they will rekindle the bond once more. We shall see.

Here's some photos and videos from the spawn of shame.

A slightly pissed female.

The upside of the spawn of shame is that it gave me some nice opportunities to photo the male displaying an angry spawning dress.

wow cool GL with the spawn. :D how big is the female salvini?

I hope the deppi get back together! I have seen very few pictures of deppi that size. I've been thinking about getting them some day and this swayed me toward them. If you had bigger predatory fish I would have seen if the eggs hatched, but definately would not have spread those hybrids around. I don't think any of those fry would have been worth while.

Sometimes it pays to read the thread rather than just looking at the pictures...

very nice looking male

would have been interesting to see what would have come of the eggs though

then again I am not against hybrids as most of the time they just end up as food for the tank they live in.

That's very unusual that a cichlid would chose a completely different species to mate with - especially given that a female of the same species is available. I wonder why that happened?

Interesting, I would be tempted to grow out some of the fry just to see what they look like. As long as you don't give them to the LFS or spread them around I don't see the harm. Strange circumstance though.

GL in future spawns however
