Im thinkin bout gettin a salvini, i wanted to know some info on these guys, especially temperment and their tendencies, good and bad... any one got ne info??
Good Meduim cichlid. Gourgous colors and do great in tanks with other small and medium fish. If you do a pair they can be extreamly agressive and would do better with medium-large cichlids that they might fend off from their nesting spot but won't just straight out attack and chase down. They will hide alot due to their nature in wild and having to hide due to their bright colors from predators. Howver, if you have alot of dithers that are their size and what not they tend to be less timid. Awsome fish though. One of my favs as I have a pair myself.
my salvini likes to hide in caves or driftwood and does not bother other fish much. when it comes to fight with a pink convict or a red devil, salvini always back them off.
I wouldn't keep the 2 in your 29 for very long. Sals can be very aggro if they want to be, and firemouths as well. I would pick one or the other. You could grow the 2 out in the 55 or whatever your planning on getting in the future, but there's really nowhere to go in a 29 if they get into a squabble.
I have had two separate experiences with Salvinis . . .
my first Salvini was a female who seemed to get along great with my Dempsey and Convict, in a 90G tank . . . like most Salvinis, she spent a lot of time hiding, but didn't seem overly shy, and I never saw any aggression . . . I went away for a few days, came home and found her in her usual spot, but this time quite dead; no evidence of illness, so I suspect there was foul play
my second Salvini was a male, and again it spent most time hiding, but instead of being passive like the female, the male would come out on hit-and-runs against the other fish in the tank . . . eventually, when he got to about 6-7", I had had enough of the aggression and he got traded in
IME, they are a very attractive fish with great colors, but aggressive in a somewhat sneaky way that I didn't really care for . . .
thanks for the good insight Sab_Fan, I would love to get a salv but i dont want it to hide in the back too much but it seems like everyones does, maybe if there arnt any threats to em in the tank itll come out more?
from what I've read, hiding and sneak attacks are more or less in their nature; it's how they feed in the wild, for example
but, every fish is unique . . . my suggestion would be to get a female; if you get a male, keep it only with fish that are bigger than it (GT, Texas, Dempsey, etc)
your best shot at getting a female is to look for the less aggressive ones, and they should have more red on the belly
