I inherited a 6-7 inch peacock and decided to put it in with my south central cichlids. Things have been fine for around 9 months then After work I went to my man cave and saw my 6-7 inch full grown male salvini dead on the bottom of the tank. Water is good, and all fish are great eaters. The peacock now seems to run the tank and every one else seems scared of it. Not sure what else could have happened and I haven't lost fish in a long time. Opinions.?

Might not be the norm or not what you'd expect, but from what I've seen I'd say it's possible and it just depends on the fish. I've had the occasional psycho aggressive male peacock have to be removed for creating chaos in a tank and more than once I've had a male peacock batter and kill another good sized peacock literally overnight.

I have always experienced that the most capable fish (as far as aggression, size, etc) does not necessarily mean that they can take care of themselves. Fish are not clever, sometimes continuous pecking from a smaller, hyper fish can stress them out to the point where they won't fight back.

I'm not knowledgeable with fish from Malawi, but I do know they have a reputation for being really active and aggressive. I thought peacocks were the exception to this, but what that means, I have no idea. I can easily see how a lot of the hyper active Malawi fish would be too much for many CA and SAs.

Looks can be deceiving i have a 3" firemouth that killed a 8" green terror and a 7" jd in less than twelve hours ,now he has his own tank lol but in your case i would remove the fish and put him with other African cichlids.

Are you sure he didn't die from any different cause? It's possible that the salvini died from something else, and just the fact that the pecking order in the tank has changed is why it seems like the other fish are scared of the peacock.

It is possible that the peacock did it, but it just seems less likely than another tankmate from what I've seen keeping africans.

Honestly my first thoughts were maybe a food issue or sickness. The peacock was always a bully in the tank minus the Sal and the JD. when ever they stepped up to the African he bailed pretty quick. There was some damage on the face and sides of the Salvini, and the peacock was in a frenzy for about 24 hours. He even attacked my Pleco. It was just speculation as I was at work when my Sal died so I will never know if the damage was caused before or after.
