Hey guys,

So I found a nice looking Salvini and had to buy it. I've read they get between 6"-9" in the aquarium. I'm gonna guess it is more along the lines of 6" tops for a male. How do you sex these fish? I've read that you go by the pointed fin theory(if pointed, it's a male) but I've also heard that if they have black on the dorsal fin it is a female. My Sal. has both

Really amazing looking cichlid with a amazing array of colors.
Anyone here currently keeping them? Any advice on making the colors come out even more?

Thanks

I have a breeding pair of Salvinis. I would have to guess you have a female. A pic would help for positive ID. If you want the best colors out of these you need a pair. Mine are really bright. But, my odd female is really dull in color. So, go out and find one that doesn't have a black mark on the dorsal fin and hope they pair up.

Thanks. Whenever mine sees itself in the glass it spreads out its gills and attempts to attack what it thinks is another Sal. Do the females act like this? Also, will it attack the other sal if it decides not to pair up?

Here are some pics. Sorry for the quality.

Camera phone + fish that won't stop moving = terrible pictures.

That looks like a female to me, that black mark is pretty definate. I thought my salvini might have been female, when I bought him at 3", cuz the black hue was almost present on his dorsal, but now he's close to 5" and its totally gone. Now his dorsal is almost a clear yellowish color with red dots. I also have a female, who I bought at the same time she's always had the black mark, like your fish, n grew very slowly. She was very, very, aggressive though, and would always square up with convicts any chance she got. I ended up tradin her back for store credit. you might just have a pretty aggressive female, which is not bad, she looks good as far as color's conscerned. I actually like that middle pic. it looks like she's really movin, even tho, sorry, but it might just be blurry.

i have a breeding pair female is 5 inch and the male is 7 so they get bigger than 6 they are very mean beat on eachother alot the male is twice as pretty but they are very beautiful when they have babys wich happend once a month until the winter, will attack my face through glass have been bitten took a lil chunk out of finger love krill above anything but eat all kinds of stuff pellets, feeder's,ghost shrimp, worms, crayfish etc.

Female. Expect her to top out at about at ~5.5 inches max. Males, I've owned one @8.5 inches, seen a male that was 11 inches (measured), and have heard of them hitting a foot.

Yeah, that's a female alright. My pair don't beat on each other but, they do beat on my odd female a little bit. Mine only get aggresive when they spawn . Even though that's all the time. Won't back down from anything.

Sex differences between Cichlasoma salvini sexually mature males only 2 thirds grown develop a red blotch in the verntral body/anal fin reigion which makes this one of the most attractive of the smaller cichlids. The size they grow to is more 6" in rare cases you may find one hitting 7 or 8" but thats quite rare.

As I previously stated, I've owned a male @ 8.5 inches, and have seen a MEASURED male @ 11 inches in a chinatown LFS. I've heard of them hitting a foot. And before you ask, I don't include the tail in measurements :D
