So I was driving around yesterday after getting my teeth cleaned from the dentist when I saw an lfs not too far from where my dentist is. Of course I go in and head straight to the cichlid section. I see cichlids that I would expect to see at any other lfs. I go through the entire section as I normally do. Then the last tank I see is labeled blue acaras. I see some and then there were two salvinis mixed with them. In every lfs that I go to I would always ask them simple questions to see if they at least have an idea of what fish they're keeping.

So I call someone to help me and I ask him what kind of fish is in that tank. He looks at the tank and says to me they're blue acaras. I ask him why do these (pointing to the salvinis) fish look different. He answers me within a split second and says, "they're female blue acaras." I laughed a little inside my head when he said that. So I continue to look at the fish and notice that the two salvinis (that have damaged fins and hiding in a corner cause the blue acaras kept chasing them) are covered in so much ich that it made me cringe a little.

I felt bad for these two cause the fact the lfs don't know what kind of fish they are, they're also sick as hell and probably super duper stressed out. So I bought them without even thinking about it. When the guy was catching the fish I told him that they have ich and asked him if they're still gonna sell them to me full price. He looked at the fish and then spoke to his boss in mandarin for a little bit. They ended up giving me both of the salvinis for the price of 1 :)

I took a little video of them. They're in a qt and starting to swim around a little bit more. Idk if they're male or female. I put salt in the tank 9 hours ago and raised the temp to 82.

Great Score! I have come across some nice deals like this at random LFS that don't know much about Cichlids. But it is too bad that they are suffering so much with Ich. Hopefully with the salt treatment, high temps, and water changes; the Salvini will pull through. Ironically, it's Salvini that are often the bullies in tanks. Good luck to you!

great job! i watched your video and the first fish that swims out of frame appears to be female, i couldnt see the other well enough to determine its sex. i have a pair, well a male and female, but they have nothing to do with each other, shes actually more interested in my jack dempsey! good luck with your rescues, keep us posted.

I did some research about sexing salvinis. I do see female in the small one. But the bigger one has some coloring on his/her belly. I don't really know how to sex it. Any tips on treating it? Should I do a water change everyday? All I know is putting salt every 12 hours and raisin the temp.

When should I do a water change? Oh and another question regarding my other tank. I tested the waters and it registered .25 ammonia 0 nitrites and 10 ppm in nitrates. What do I do to keep the ammonia 0?

How much salt do I add? They're in a 10g (I know it's small but it's the best I can do) and if I take out 5g how much salt should I put back? I've only put 10 teaspoons of salt earlier and haven't added any after.

I would go higher on the temperature to at least 86oF, aerate the water well and continue with the partial water changes and salt. Actually, the higher water temperature alone will cure the ich. Good luck with them.
