I was wondering at what size a female Salvini could spawn? My female is only 2.5" at best, but her and my male have suddenly become quite fond of each other. They have also cleared out a secluded corner of my tank and seem to be defending it together. What other signs should I look for to see if they are getting ready to spawn?

I'm not sure if there really is a specific size. I'm always surprised at how young some cichlids seem to be able to spawn at. It sounds like your two Sals have paired up. Besides the signs you have already mentioned... I'd look for more intense coloring, obvious displaying by the male, and heightened aggression by both.

Good luck!

Had a pair that spawned successfully when the male was about 3" and the female just over 2" TL.

Well, CJ I have seen all of those signs as well. Today the female's belly seems a little bigger as well. I have my fingers crossed. I would love to see something other than mollies breed successfully. Thank you all for your input.

They are very nasty when breeding so you should be careful with their tank mates.

My 5" male and 4" female got in a huge fight with a large 8" festae and did quite a lot of damage. The festae owned them in the end but they wouldn't back up so they got hurt pretty badly as well.

I have been watching things pretty closely as aggression is up. So far nothing too serious, just a lot of chasing. My firemouths tend to give them a wide berth anyhow. I am hoping things don't get too serious, but I am aware of salvini's reputation so I'm ready to move fish.

Thanks again everybody. I guess my fish were waiting for valentines. I woke up this morning to find my female defending a nice little clutch of eggs. I now see what everyone was talking about saying that they are fierce for their size. My little female has half the tank to herself right now. Occasionally she will let the male come down there, but any other intruders are quickly shown back to the other side of the tank. I'm excited to see the fry develop.

I just went to check on my little mother and thought she had eaten most of her eggs. I watched her for a few minutes and discovered that she was hiding them instead. She has been picking them off of the flat stone she laid them on and spitting them into a crack between two other stones. I'm not sure if you will be able to see it in the pic, but the white dots are some of the eggs in her new "hiding spot".
