I have a 4' long 90G tank with many rocks and driftwood containing:

7" Oscar
4" Salvini
4-5" Jack Dempsy
4-5" Firemouth
8" Pleco
5" Striped Rapheal

The tank is relativly peaceful but lately the Salvini and Jack Dempsey are starting to try to fight. I haven't seen any lip locking yet but close. So far it has been a standoff. However, I was wondering what will happen when the Jack continues to outgrow the Salvini. Will the salvini still be able to defend itself?

By the way, I may remove Pleco. So far 50% weekly water changes and good filtration have kept the water in good condition.

I wouldn't say that for sure, depends if the Dempsey is a skittish or assertive one. Salvini's are a lot tougher and aggressive than people give them credit for.

If it's a male Salvini I'd definitely say it'll be fine. If it's a female up against a full sized aggressive JD then you might have problems but it should be able to defend itself, Salvinis are a much more agile fish.

Different cichlids of the same species have different temperments. The only way to know the answer to your question is just to wait and see.

My female salvini is a monster...at only 3-4" it has killed a 5" creek chub by taking a chunk out of its belly, it killed a 3" convict the same way, and if it doesn't like a fish it just gets rid of it itself.

Currently i have a 1-2" JD growing out and i personally don't think it'll stand a chance with the sal. unless the sal likes it.

It could go either way as everyone has suggested, it's never good to underestimate salvini's because of smaller size, if they were huge they would be considered among the most aggressive cichlids

Salvani.

I have a small Salvani in a growout tank with two jd, two texas, two green terror, and two firemouth. The one Salvani kicks rules the tank.

If both were at full size, the JD.
