I'm wondering what is the smallest tank I could keep a single Salvini in with? What about with a Con or FM ? I thought maybe a 30 breeder for just a Sal but I'm probably wrong lol If I was to make a tank what dimensions would you suggest? I have a 36"x12"x12" tank although I'm sure that its is going to be small for just the Sal. What about a pair of Sals? Also will the min tank size be because of activity/swimming room or because of the bioload?

Thanks!

I have a 30g breeder and a pair of sals would fit in it. They don't require much height. For a full grown pair you might need some upgraded filtration, but that really depends on your water change schedule. By the way, Rise against is one of my favorite bands.

Wicked! :) Its just a matter of finding a used 30 breeder and then I'll go get some Giant danios to cycle that puppy. How would I go about finding a pair? Just buy 3 or 4 juvies from the LFS and see if anyone pairs up and when someone does pair up sell the rest?

I've got a spare Emperor 400 so I think I should be fine for filtration. The hardest is going to be making my own light fixture which is fairly easy and waiting to put them in the tank.

By the way, I'm going to see them on June 19th with Rancid :D

Would a pair be okay in my 36"x12"x12" tank? What about a 33 gallon, 36"x12"x19"? Basically would a pair be okay in a tank only 36" long by 12"s wide? I could add a sump or something to add some extra gallons onto the 36"x12"x12" seeing as it would only be 22 gallons.

The only problem i see is the width of the tank. Salvini can get up to 8 or 9 inches. My male is 8 inches and still growing.
Also if you had a pair beware of agression. These guys can be nasty to their gals.

So then the 36"x12"x12" would be okay if added a 10 gallon sump for a pair? With the 30 breeder or 33 gallon (36"x12"x18") being the best of my available options?

I guess I'd have to wait and see how nice the guy turns out to be to her. Hopefully he would be nice enough not to beat her up and I could get a few batches of fry from them before I just start sucking them down the drain. On average how nice are the males to the females while breeding? Would a few dithers help at all?

Should be kept in at least a 4', 4x15 or 4x18 footprint would be ideal.

Unless you want to cram them into a tiny tank of course. Bare minimum fishkeeping is overly popular around here. Depending on the pair you may even want to look at going 5', as you might need to seperate with eggcrate with holes only big enough for the female to fit through.

If you kept a solo one in a 30+ gallon you are fine. Above 7 inches is not common for a Sal. My male is over 3 years old in a 240 and is right at 7 inches. Aggression I think you will find will nessecitate a single sal in a smaller tank.
