Sounds like pre-spawn courting. Watch the other fish in the tank. If they are planning to spawn soon, they may harass the other fish to much. Maybe a Sal. only tank. My little male is with my Painted Turtle. He acts as a good little cleaner of uneaten food from the turtle, as well as little pieces of peeling skin from his body.

Today I got home from class and discovered that they killed the firemouth in the tank. They were also tag-teaming my 6+" JD. No injuries, but the JD is now on the other side of a divider. The male sal now attacks me through the glass every time I go near the tank.
