Same Tank, Same water, New filters but amonia spike???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; Just searched and read about stress zyme. The ad states that it has 300 million live bacteria per tablespoon and is an aid to establish a biological filter. As you already have fish in the tank and apparently plan to use it, sooner appears the better choice than later. It apparently will add to the bacteria needed right away and they will begin to reproduce along with those already in the tank. I also gather this will be of more benefit when you do add the sting ray as the bacteria will have some time to become more established ahead of time.
It has been several days since the start of this thread. Are the ammonia readings still elevated? I have not used stress zyme myself so cannot comment on how well it works. But if it works as advertised, it should help the fish you already haveas well as preparing the tank for a new addition.

Thanks for all the information about stress zyme, I did a water test before I went to bed and when I woke up but my nitrates are still high and my Ph is at 6.8 I heard somewhere that lower Ph with high nitrates or high ammonia is better than having your Ph higher, I just put the stress zyme in last night so it hasn't even been 24 hours and my ammonia is at 0 so ammonia is down and nitrates are up looks like the stress zyme did something thanks for recommending that stress zyme

Sounds to me like you need to do some researching. Both on the nitrogen cycle as it pertains to the aquarium and proper tank sizes for rays.

I just took my 60 gallon saltwater tank down and took those filters from that tank after cleaning them up and put them in my 90 gallon freshwater tank and my ammonia went up. one filter is a bio wheel and the other is a canister filter the filter media on the biowheel is from the filter I had before on the 90 gallon but I washed it off and the canister has the same charcoal as it did in the saltwater tank but its washed out. I'm a little worried because I'm getting a ray most likely by the end of the week if I can fix this.

You should wash the materials first before inseting the new stuff into the new aquarium...........CHarcoal should not be looked at as a main ingredient inside of the filter.......Charcoal should just be the polisher, but not the main resident in any level of the filter........I fill my canister with biological media, not mechanical.........

Hello; Most posts about pH suggest leaving it alone. Your pH is close to the 7.0 neutral. Issues with pH seem to be associated with quick changes. Most do not fool with it if it stays fairly steady.

It's staying steady at 6.8 so I'm not even going to bother with it and I did wash out the canister filter and charcoal isn't the only thing in there I have a few types of sponge but will be picking up some biological media soon

Hello; Does this indicate that you have again washed the medium in the filter in the last day or so or are you refering to the cleaning of several days ago?
Washing the filter medium may remove the BB (unless it is rinsed in tank water). If rinsed with tap water the BB may be removed. Some wash their filter medium in tank water during water changes. Some only clean a portion of the filter medium at one time to preserve the BB in the remainder. Some float the old medium in the tank in mesh bags when replacing or cleaning the medium in a filter or when setting up a new tank. Some keep secondary filters in operation, such as sponge filters or second filters to keep the BB population from being removed. It is my understanding that over time a tank becomes fully cycled and there is an adequate population of BB spread throught the tank to deal with the ammonia produced by the inhabitants of the tank. Others may be better able to giver a time line for this.
For example one of my filters has two slots for filter medium and I clean only one at a time
