ohio
so i am an idiot ....
i setup my new 180 yesterday then dumped 100-150lbs of sand in it ...
needless to say the water is all cloudy and tan

i started the filters, and added chemicals for the cycle. how long should it take the sand to settle?
i cant put goldies in there until the water clears up, but i need to get them in ASAP to aid in the cycle ...

any way to clear the water quicker? i know running the filters wont help, becuase its creating water current ... but what else can i do?
will it take more than a day or two?

leave it alone for a couple of days, no 2 ways around it....it will settle.

yes keep your filters going. When I do sand tanks, I set up the tank, add water, rinse the sand then get a large cup, or well a pot and fill it up with sand then slowly set it on the bottom and tip it over. But when I did stir up one tank really bad it took about a day or two to settle. Filters going and all.

You talking about goldfish in there? How bad does it look?

no goldfish yet, but i would like to get them in soon, so it helps cycle faster ...
the water is pretty bad, i wouldnt want to put them in it yet. its been 12-14 hours, but the water is still very tan/brown with dust

I would stir it all up and then do a 90% water change. do this even more than once and then you have washed your sand...next time just do it before you add the sand

probably because you didnt wash it well enough
your filters will clear it up in a few days but when your fish stir up sand itll make a cloud probably

i like the idea of stirring it up then doing waterchange, BBBUUUUUTTTTT then i lose all my chemicals i am trying to establish ...

anyone elses opinions on the stirring and water change idea ??

did you wash the sand first?
why are you in such a hurry?
why do you need chemicals?
why do you need goldfish?

you should have washed the sand before putting it in.
but i think you know that.
the only fast way now is to stir up the sand and do very big waterchanges.
eventually it will be cleaned.
