Sand as a substrate with an arowana ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Substrate really isn't important to an Arowana. I'd say sand or gravel. Anything goes but imo gravel is nicer and easier to clean.

Be careful with gravel..
One guy lost his 2 feet RTG(a real beaty) because of gravel. How?
He fed it live feed and sometimes when the fish goes down the arowana goes to catch and when it scoops up the live fish some gravel also gets in its stomach and finally it ended up dead

I find this hard to believe. I have watched my arowana expell sand,/gravel, plants and driftwood many of times all the while keeping the food in their mouths. Likely it died from something else.

I did too.. My aro also used to spit our gravel when this used to happen.. But mine is only 6" this one is 2 feet.
Its the truth the owner cut open the stomach and found gravel in its stomach.he bought it for 1,50,000 INR and it died within.a week.. This happened at the aquarium from where it was bought

Sand should be fine. My biggest concern on that combo would be the aro eating the geos lol

Does anybody know if pool filter sand is ok for geos ?
I haven't switched to sand yet just trying to see if will be ok for both the geos and and arowana?

I say pool filter Sand is okay. It's heavier so it shouldn't clog your filters either. My 3 geo's have pool filter sand with no problems and sand is the best substrate for your geo's. it's so fun to watch them sift trough the sand to find food. Any sand cleaned thoroughly should work fine. I have play sand in my 20 gallon right now with my two juvenile orange head geo's. best of luck to you and have fun with a great fish.

Sand + geos + aro has worked many times for me, great combo! Any sand will be good for the aro, but with the geophagus try avoid sand with sharp edges, and the finer it is the better.
