sand bottom filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You just want to put a very thin layer, just enough to cover the bottom. You may get a little sand in the filter but the filter itself will capture it. If any particles make it down to your impeller it may make some noise and you can just take it out and rinse it off but I have never had to do it yet in 25 years

what if the sand particles get up in the filter?
They get caught by the filter. I have 4"+ of sand in one of my tanks and occasionally I have to clean out the sand from the FX5, but my AQ110 never gets sand in it and I never have problems with the sand damaging anything.

this all depends on what kind of sand you are using. if you are using play sand, for example, you might have the sand getting sucked up into the filter, and it get pulled up by a siphon when you are cleaning your tank. a more coarse type of sand will probably not have these problems. in my case, i have stoney river aquarium sand in my tank which is fine grain sand but also heavy, so it sinks right away. My siphon does not suck up my sand at all.
