sand bottom question

I dont see why you have to, everything settles on top, or the fish move it around constantly depending what fish u have.

I've got sand...Just don't keep the siphon on one spot or it will suck a lot of sand. Oh and make sure the sand is settled before turning on filters.

Easiest way for me was keeping it planted. I had a two inch base on my eighty freshwater with a bumload of plants. Anachris, anubia nana, chilensis, bamboo, cabomba to name a few. All of the waste added from feeding quickly became nutrient for the plants as well as constant fish waste. I'd see some spikes but nothing near an unsafe range. I had two eight inch plecos and four ten inch dojo loaches sifting sand though. Good luck.

i have sand with my oscars too. very easy to clean. the sand i am using is heavy enough for me to actually clean it like its gravel. but if you use a finer grain of sand just skim the top of it like everyone else said.
