Does the quickrete sand give it a darker color?

Yes. Play sand looks beachy white but easy lifted by fish digging. Lost a few filters to sand. :( but thats because im an idiot who doesnt turn them off when adding the sand.

Can't go wrong with pfs. The large grain doesn't kick up into filters as easily, and super easy to clean. The only drawback to a sand bottom would have to be seeing the poo all over the place. Nothing a quick vac can't fix though. I made the change from gravel to sand and my cichlids love it.

I like the look of the play sand but I have a feeling when a fish kicks it up it makes the whole tank cloudy any truth to that? Also I do like the PFS just wondering if it comes in a more bright color? Due to everyone's overwhelming response with the PFS I may go that route I do think the grains look a little large but if it'll save my filter I'll go with it.

Playsand is dustier. Pool filter sand can get kicked up and wont cloud your water. That picture i showed with the rocks i had JUST poured in around 75lbs of pfs in and it wasnt so cloudy. The picture of the tank that had the white clouded water was the play sand hours later. Also with play sand the fish poop and left over food and any debris gets trapped at the top of it and is easily siphoned up. With the pool filter sand it sinks and gets trapped in it and you need to gravel vac it out like you would gravel.

I use aragonite sand in my 20 gallon... I used to have some small cichlids, but I traded them in and got a crayfish.

I would recommend pool filter sand and aragonite. Play sand is not much cheaper than pool filter sand.
