:nilly:HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT. IANY TIME I TRY A SAND SUBSTRTATE IT GETS IN MY FILTER AND IT BREAKS IT. IVE BEEN THROUGH A AQUA CLEAR 30 AND A PENGUIN BIO WHEEL 200 ALREADY:irked::irked:

um.......................i thought sand was sand.

it is getting caught in the impeller.. Either shorten the intake tube or put a sponge over the intake to catch any sand. I have never had an issue in my sand tanks, but I use Eheim canisters and the last place the water sees before being pumped back into the tank is the impeller, where on HOB's its the first.

Are you putting the sand in first or the water?
sand

put a sponge over the intake and shorten the intake valve... also there are different types of sands... i kno for a fact that the sand used when putting down pools is much heavier then regular sand.... so you might want to consider investing in that

you can put a foam prefilter over the AC intake or an Emporer but thats NOT recomended with a penguin..it WILL effect the water flow and eventually stop the bio-wheels.

Whats happening is that the sand is bieng drawn into the intake tube and in both cases this leads directly to the recessed impeller chamber of the motor..it builds up...stops the impeller magnet and without water flow the motor over heats and burns out. This even happens with most canisters although it takes longer.

Like everyone said...raise the pick up tube to the upper third of the tank or the halfway mark in taller tanks and you should be safe.

can i get pool sand at home depot
