Sand filters also known as pool filters

Does a pool sand filter keep its biological qualities after you back wash it? I have read there are beads you are able to put in the filter instead of sand, is this any better?

I run a pool sand filter on my tank retro fitted with a sinking media works alright not as good as an ultima but does the job and no shouldn’t hurt the bio might knock off the older or dead bacteria same as k1 being tumbled. There’s several different media’s available usually plastic media takes a lot less head pressure to back flush then sand and cleans better.

Thank you, what is an Ultima. Is there a préfered media that you would suggest?

Ultima is a production filter designed for pond and aquarium use based around a pool filter if you have the ability to buy one I would over a sand filter

Thank you, I looked into them and will most likely purchase one with a new set up I am putting together . They look much better than the sand filters.

Odd question not really good enough for its own thread regarding air-blower on a sand filter or sand-to-bead retrofit:
How unwise would it be to plumb-in a BCD's low-pressure inflator (120PSI) for SCUBA air rather than sourcing, importing & plumbing a 1Hp blower?
Small-island DIY...

Ultimately the Ultima 2000 will better do the work, but I can get an oversized pool filter from any hotel or villa renovation...
