Yes that would work but its expensive at about $25-$30 for 25lbs getting Pool Sand or a type of Quartz Sand is cheaper at half that per pound

I just converted my tank from gravel to sand and it's awesome with a capital A! I was trying to decide between pool filler sand, play sand, or quartz and I ended up going with the quartz. 3M no longer makes the color quartz so I went with it's substitute called Spectraquartz. I have a thread called "substrate questions" if you want to check it out.

I used play sand I got at Home Depot. $3 for a 50lb bag.
