So I have been looking everywhere in town for some pool filter sand for my 75 gal. I havent been able to find any but today I ran across some play sand..... as in for sand boxes.... this was labeled as Cleaned and screened... Will this sand work? Or is my best bet still gonna be pool filter sand?

I use the playground sand from Home Depot for my tanks....

it works, play sand is cheap, just make sure you rinse the hell out it.

Just make sure the sand is inert. A few drops of car battery acid on a pinch of sand will tell you. If it sizzles, it's no good. If it does not, then you're okay.

The play sand worked fine in one of my tanks. Had a large amount of silty clay so I had to wash it alot more than the pool filter sand.

sounds like I should just keep looking for the pool sand...... I really dont wanna spend all day rinsing through sand:irked:.... How many pounds of the pool sand will I need for the 75?

A 50 lb. bag of sand will fill your 75 exactly one inch deep, assuming your tank has a 48" X 18" footprint.

Here's how I rinse sand: fill a bucket about 1/4 full of sand, then run water into it with a hose (not so strong a flow that you slosh water out). Stir vigorously with your hand (this can be rough on your skin) or a sturdy tool. Most of the fine particles will stay suspended in the water long enough to pour them off, while the heavier grains will sink to the bottom.

It'll take several rounds of rinsing for each batch, and will take several hours for the whole bag if you are using play sand or leveling sand. I haven't tried pool or sandblasting sand.
