sand for freshwater tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pool filter sand usually works the best for the tanks ive had and everyone i've known, its also relatively cheap, down here atleast.

i really like the look of the lapis lustre sand in the photo jk47 posted. I would like to get some of that, but none of my local dept. stores have it. I could order it online, but shipping would be a #$%& . At my lfs, they had some "freshwater use specific" sand.. more expensive, but maybe in the end not as expensive after shipping from the other :/ I'm going to look into the pool filter sands too, jw how fine it is.

I used quickrete med grit sand. Fighting for 2 weeks with murky water. Done 3-4 100% water changes. Problem is that I tried like an idiot to wash the ENTIRE bag at once. Big mistake and am paying dearly for it now. Love the wet color though. I dont openly recomend it but I do think a lot of my problems are self induced

Got it at Home Depot

Silica Sand FTW!!!!

I got a 40 lb bag of Silica Sand @ Home Depot for $8. BONUS! It's also on the lighter side.

^ This is what i have in my tank.

It's a little too sharp for my liking, but i have a turttle with a dry area for basking and when she sliding back in it's a bit too rough and also floats on the surfacea abit casue it's pretty small grain size.

However they sand in the water stirs up a bit but not too much, very bright when it's nice and clean which is cool. It can pack down and become a bit dense cause of the small grain size but just run your hand or something trough it when you do water changes and it's fine.

Thx for the info! I still haven't decided which kind to get :/ I don't want a lot of problems with sand floating, or too cloudy for too long

I washed but i don't remeber it being very cloudy. It only floats when the dry stuff from the basking area falls in. The rest can get stired up a little but usually not too bad.

Some home depots have a broken bag area where they sell cancrete, sand, and stuff for supper cheap cause the bag is ripped and some is gone. You might be able to get a partail bag and check it out in either your tank or another small tank. Plus it's cheap to buy regular so if you change your mind not a huge problem.
