sand from home depot?

Home Depot carries Sand called Quickrete Commercial Grade sand in medium size grains. It is a white sand that you can almost use straight out of the bag. I washed mine a couple of times but it was fairly clean to begin with. I wouldn't ever use play sand. You would have to wash that stuff many, many times to get it even close to clean.
 
I had playsand and it sucks. It ruined the impellers in my HOB filter. It's too fine and clouds up all the time. Get something heavier.
 
I have used it in both cichlids tanks and planted tanks (just add root tabs).

I have heard the sand varies from state to state though, so it's type might be regional. A buddy of mine in AZ says its more red. Mine in UT looks like crushed granite mixed with beach sand (minus the shells)
 
I bought Orange County Silica Sand from Lowes great stuff and cheap!!! 100lb bag for 8 bux it comes in different grains sizes.
