Sand from the beach?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used sand from a local lade in the mountains. It is not from a beach where tons of people visit. I found it to be very clean with almost no gunk or debris coming from it when rinsed. I went about a foot into the lake before digging and i think mother nature had already filtered it. Lots of cool little pebbles too.

In one of my 75 gal tanks I have PFS, but it is sooooo white...... I added a small pail of sand from a natural beach on Lake Erie and it looks much better. Rinsed it a couple times but no cloudy water (the fines are already out of it as I got it from the water line). I did boil it before use just to be safe.
Don't know about salt water sand but as mentioned above I would be worried about pH buffering (unless thats OK with you).

my brother tried to use beach sand and it called all his fish...i personally just bit the bullet and bought cichlid sand but he told me to do the same thing and go to home depot and get pool filter sand and that it would be a lot cheaper

Just go to home depot and get some playsand 4 something for a 50 pound bag or get pool sand. Taking sand from a beach is illegal and not really worth getting a ticket for that will end up costing you a hell of a lot more then a couple bags would have costed you from a pool place or home depot.
