Sand getting into filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To me, the most important are of a tank to filter is the waters surface. The air water interface is where the most toxic, water degrading stuff builds up, (proteins, other dissolved organic carbon, etc). But because most of this stuff is invisible (unless its oily or scum) it isn't thought about.
I have seen surface skimmer attachments that would deal with this stuff, and at the same time eliminate all but the most light weight sand form entering the filter.
Sure everyone thinks fish feces is a filters main target, to me it is not, that's what vacuuming is for.

Just went through the same thing .. had to put a camera on the tank and when no ones in the room one of my severums takes mouth full of sand to the top of the intake sponge and spits the sand into the gap between intake and sponge

I had fish to do the same thing, pretty sure I saw one smiling right after dropping a mouthful. lol Unfortunately raising the filter intake doesn't always help, it really depends on the fish one is keeping.

I would be worried about stemming intake too much, easy way to burn out the motor, have you tried cleaning the sand more?

you can go with a heavy grain sand

I have tried small grain play sand in the past, the fish loved it but it was a filter killer

I know use a heavier/larger grain sand and I still get a little sand here and there in the filter but nowhere near as much
