I am a big fan of sand-blasting sand.. I use it in almost all my tanks!

Have you tried glass beads? I am waiting on someone to chime in on how they look in a tank. EXPENSIVE though:(

The home depot sand should be rinsed a ton. I had that for a while in the 240 and it was a HUGE pain in the *** because after rinsing each bag about 4 times which takes about 30 minutes to do it right, and having 6 bags of it in the tank, I was in a bad mood. It still left the water really really cloudy for a day or so until I put some aquaclear in the water and it clumped the particles together and cleared up. Pool filter sand is great from what I've heard from other members. The sand blasting sand isn't really sand is it, its just fine gravel right? The estes sand is amazing I used to run it in my Ecat tank and run it in my SAL tank now BUT, it costs alot roughly $1/Lb around me at the lfs ~Trent

You don't have to rinse the sand... but its alot better if you do especially with estes it clumps bad if not prerinsed. The cheaper sand like playsand from lowes or home depot has a ton of silicates in it so it helps alot on that to make your water clearer from the start. Playsand is like $5 for a 50lb bag ~Trent

I just bought Home depot play sand for my 150g, I'll try to post pics soon.
I washed it over and over, and when i put it in my tank it was a little cloudy but in an hour it was clear again

got mines at the depot too...works for me , but i recently mixed it with river sand.......

I was turned on to pool filter sand and never looked back!

I use the white sand from homedopt but starting to irritate me, too fine gets suck in the filter all the time, great for large tanks, but small tanks not so friendly if you have strong current, otherwise best value for $$. Works greAt for my 120 African cichlids.

Why aren't you using the Lapis Lustre from our local PDX fish stores? Best sand on earth! :grinno:
