Sand in a fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure, but that looks like silica or pool filter sand. Yeah it looks nice, very clean.

play sand is more course and darker in color.

Here's a pic of playsand with the polyfil wrapped around my intakes

Got playground sand from Lowes. It is very nice (except rinsing it before put into the tank). Every time I clean the filter, there are some sand at the bottom of the filter. NO regret what so ever. Wish it is a little whiter.

I have used Crayola Crayon colored sand. It is available in all kinds of wild colors. It was ultra fine grain andonly cost a couple of bucks for a 50 pound bag at Walmart.

Wow that Crayola stuff is neat.

IMO pool filter sand is the way to go. No filter issues, relatively clean out of the bag, you can vaccuum crap off it without sucking up sand. It's the way to go, unless you want to go more expensive with the 3M stuff or Estes.

another big vote for Pool Filter Sand - can't go wrong with that one ( just make sure it has no "extras" - chemicals that clean pools )

I bought 6 bags of that stuff for my 120 gal and used 4 of the bags, to top the soil with it and I love it.

this is a picture of the tank ( the front "line" is where you can see the sand best ;) )
