Sand in AC110

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually the sand goes through the impeller to get to the filter media in an AC 110. I wouldn't worry to much about flow rates, unless it's the only filter you've got?

I highly recommend you mod some sponges say from an ac30-50 and throw those on the intake.

It's in Canister filters where sand gets nowhere near the impeller/pumps.

I have a new sponge for my ac200. So I should cut a place in the sponge to let the intake tube fit down into it? This is the only filter on the tank right now.

I have some polyfiber that I could push down into the end of the intake tube. Would this also work? I can cut the sponge to fit inside the tube also.

I have no covering on either of my intakes. I have def found some sand gunked up on my impellers & in the impeller shaft though, I just cleaned it out with a q-tip and it was ok.

Just make sure to keep your intake away from the sand surface, don't use the extension tube. My tubes are about halfway up on my tank & it helps, like this:

I don't have the extension tube on the intake. I didn't want it going down into the tank that far. I have taken a sponge and cut it in half, cut a slit in the middle, and shoved the intake tube down in there. It seems to be running fine without any restriction on the flow. I just hope the sponge will catch all of the sand particles. I know the media bag was working because it was even filtering out very fine particles. The water was crystal clear. I'll see how the sponge works. If it doesn't work as well then I will go back to the media bag. It didn't look pretty but it was working.

Nice fish... really fine sand...!

I give you guys a lot of credit for doing the sand thing.... they all look great and very natural....!!!

For now it is not for me... but who knows... When I add my other tank maybe I will experiment...!!

Well I just couldn't help myself. I went and bought some pool filter sand. I got a 50lb bag for $10.00. If the color is very close to the sand in the tank then I will just add the pool filter sand on top. I also got an off black stocking to go over the sponge and intake tube. I'm hoping this will help disguise the sponge on the tube and make it a little more appealing to the eye. I guess I'll see how it works in just a little while.

I guess I'm going to chalk this one up to leasons learned.

1. Not all pool filter sand is created equally. Some is not rinsed.

2. Always rinse anything that you put into your tank!

Anyway, the sand matched the color of the sand I aready had in the tank so I just applied it over the top. I had to do a VERY big water change to clear the water. It's not crystal clear but it's better. Now I'm back off to Walmart because they left my air pump out of my bag!
So leason number 3. Always check to make sure you get what you paid for!
