So I am getting a 55 gal. And I was going to get black beauty sand until my mom pointed out the problems my grandpa had with his aquarium and silica sand. I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with silica sand or black beauty sand? And if it's a good idea to get sand in a new aquarium? Thanks, John

I used black Colorquartz for mine, but they're no longer in business. Spectraquartz is almost identical to it. Both were/are expensive, but great. Petco seems to have a black sand listed online as well, but I have no idea how fine it is, nor have I used it. Tahitian Moon Sand is decent, but expensive. I would not use Black Beauty, personally.

@calioutlaw the water gets cloudy, the ammonia goes up and the fish die. I think it's anaerobic and that he needs some trumpet snails.
@Gervhalt I agree. I looked unit it more, and it is iron, so it would rust and mix with the water. Also, it's sharp which isn't good for mbuna's. I might just go with silica sand. Wish they had less expensive black stuff.
