I have three oscars 10", 11", and 7" and a 16" clown knife in a 75 gallon. Soon will be upgrading them to a 180 gallon. For now there in the 75 gallon with white sand. I'm thinking about taking out the sand and not putting any in the 180 gallon. because it gets so murky and gets in the filters etc.. Has anyone had experience with an aquarium with a bare bottom? Is there any drawback? other than the looks of course.

I've had no problem with my bare bottoms. IMO its better to have a bare bottom because there is nothing to scratch the bottom. The only drowback I see of a bare bottom is that some decorations might scratch the bottom, but in a tank with larger fish it is easier to clean with a bare bottom and no decorations. Some people say silver arowana have the tendency to stare at a bare bottom since it might reflect light, but anything with common since wont stare at a bright light. Sometimes algae will grow on the bottom, but that's no different than algae growing on the side. You just get something that will eat the algae or you scrub it off.

good points. The only thing i have in the tank as decor is drift wood. Only two pieces of medium sized drift wood in the 75. And Ill probably only have one large musgrove stump in the 180. Do you think the wood could scratch the bottom?

It's possible, but very, very unlikely. Just make sure you don't place any sharp parts on the glass and that the driftwood is stable, so it doesn't tip over.

bare bottom. i used to have sand and took it out. i painted the bottom/back black from the outside and no algae. easy clean just vac everything thats not attached.

ailachami do you have some pics of the tank you did that to? It sounds like a great idea, id like to see what it looks like?
