I use both, it looks more natural that way, you have sand but with little pebbly outcrops, this way all my fish are happy, the Madagascans, nicaraguensis and geo like the sand, whereas my Prochilodus loves cleaning the gravel of algae

I use children's play sand and to keep most of the sand out of the filters, I raise the intake tubes higher.
