I think gravel is the better choice, if you get the playground gravel from your local landscape supply place it's heavy enough to keep plants rooted down even with JD's in the tank and the crushed limestone normally found in the mix will help keep your PH and buffering capacities at proper levels. Not to mention it's about .04lb as compared to about 2.00lb. . . Just my opinion though.
