Sand or Gravel

I have a 180g with black sand, it brings out the color in my moba frontosa fry

I have pool filter sand in all my tanks and I like the looks. However it has been rough on some of my impellers. I think a small dark gravel looks best. My cichlids appear to like as well as my loaches

The black sand you saw at PetSmart is made by CaribSea. You can find it only fairly cheap. Estes also makes black sand that has no buffering properties, though the package would make you believe it might.

Prefilter would prevent sand from getting spit into it right?
