sand or gravel

Matt, I let my siphon "hover" over the stuff on top of the sand, and gently siphon the sand in the "eating area". I tap the doo hicky on rocks and stuff to get the sand out. Some of the sand is sucked up, but my nasty water goes into my flower bed so no big deal!
I used play sand in my 200, and colored play sand in my 30 ( its blue), and gravle in my 75. Gravle definatly sucks, sand is way easier and plants and cat fish love it.

I have heard more than one cichlid keeper complain about play sand becuase it's so fine. In my tanks I'm using pool filter sand which is coarse and heavy enough to not get picked up by my siphon. There are other, much finer types of sand that may be easier to accidentally suck up.

I switch back and forth from the concrete sand at home depot.. to big buffed gravel with my SA CA tank... It's medium. I have ahd no problems... My fish love the sand more as they are busy all day every day moving it around!!
