Sand or Gravel

I doubt an Aro would care about substrate, but lighter colors do reflect more light.

So get over it, you said it, my fish is better than your fish!!! So inspire me, cause is more light reflection a good or bad thing ? So sorry you all have to put up with damn newb'ies. :evil_lol:

Strangely enough, you may have a point, my Aro shy's from white tshirts and it took him 3 months to not be afraid of my hair when I worked with him, I had to put it up. He'd spook and headbang if I walked by with my hair down (REAL blonde thank you) Freak.

Black sand looks nice and all but keep in mind that its just crushed onyx. and thus can have some sharp edges. Not a concern so much with arros as they rarely sit on the ground. but bottom dwellers may not like it much.
as for your filters you will want to make sure the intakes are moved up about 6" or so from the ground so any sand that does get kicked up dosen't get sucked into your filter.
So would that be OK for plecos and loaches? (Sand)

i use gravel and a bit of sand mix, just a thin layer. i had it in and i dont wanna have it disturbed but i'd rather have a bare bottom tank, much cleaner for the water. my jardini tank is bare bottomed

I could start a roll of good remarks here, but does your bare bottom have problems when aros headbang or go after something and do a faceplant in the bottom of the tank, I like there to be soft soft padding so he doesn't end up like dudes cyclops!

Regular white sand or Playsand would be fine. but I would not reccomend black sand for those. because plecos and loaches have soft underbellys. The blacksand would scratch them.

Thank you for the tip, I've been talking to one who uses nothing, leaves the bottom bare. I'll have to see how it goes. I understand pool filter sand is safe? I have a rambunctious (sp?) Aro who sometimes faceplants the bottom, why oh why psyco fish.

He hurt himself pretty bad yesterday, has a huge contusion, lost 4 scales. I melafixed and added peat as a media, he's settled now, They JUST DON"T KNOW HOW TO STOP BEING PSYCHO!:nutkick: :wall: :angryfire :hitting:

i dont feed my aro feeders so he doesnt do that headbang thing at the bottom. if i feed live stuff, i make sure they float. and asians and jardinis dont really do headbangs at the tank floor, they do but much milder than the way silvers and blacks do it. i remember how my silver does it, with force enough to send gravel flying all over!
