Sand or gravel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had it all and the only thing i can add is that if using the big size broken coral, watch you calcium. i used number 9 sand i think. It leached calcium in to my system. It was basically broken pieces of dead coral or something. Now i use sand and vac it every so often, very slow as to not stir it up in the water.

Hey Glassbox, what LFS sold you the fish in your avatar? I think I'd like to pick one up. Might even overstock to control aggression ;)

Ya thats by biggest problem that i was going to bring up cuz i have bichirs and every one in a while they eat them and have alot of trouble passing them lol thats why i wanted to do sand.. lol alittle easier on the digestive system. bare bottom could be cool to try as well tho. do you use sand for ur bichirs?

no, I'm a bare bottom tank believer:headbang2, beside there is a chance that sand could get vacuumed into the filter.

I'll empty my tank for it.:nilly:

Maybe its just me personally not being a fan of BB tanks... so i went with a fine sand, which i know it a lot more of hassle > gravel, but my fish seem to enjoy it, and i don't mind cleaning it once - twice a week while doing my water changes...

or otherwise use a finer gravel compared to what your using now? maybe that could help with your problem???
