Sand or Gravel ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sand is great and looks better than gravel but buy pool filter sand it's the best don't by natural play sand or any others because the best is pool filter sand you never know once you try it and many types of fish for fresh and salt water require sand bottoms for a number of reasons like corys to eat top layer off and feed I don't believe any fish needs gravel but I could be wrong correct me if I am. So I would just go with sand

i say try out sand, i much prefer it to gravel - not only aesthetically but also because many kinds of fish/inverts like to burrow in the substrate and sand allows them to do this easily. Also, sand doesn't hurt the barbels of loaches/catfish. The sand I have is fine but heavy so that my siphon can go through it and not suck any of it up out of the tank. In general detritus will accumulate on top of the sand, and you can just siphon it out.

The only thing with sand is that gas pockets can form in it unless it gets disturbed periodically, which is why I would recommend putting malaysian trumpet snails in a tank with sand substrate.

Thanks for opinions and advice.I will try sand in this tank and if it goes well I will do the other one too.I've never heard of pool sand before, can you tell me more about it,and do I have to worry about my Plecos with sand ?and do you have to rinse it or wait till it settles before putting fish in?

i use white sand and trust me it is a charm... well neva used PFS so no idea on that... and as per clouding the water... i guess only if u put beach or playsand it would do that orelse u shud b fine....

sand is easier to clean since detritus stays on top but be careful when scrubbing tank since scrubber tends to pickup sand bits and scratch up tank.

I'm redoing one of my freshwater tanks and I've never used sand before and was wondering if it's better than gravel to clean?,does it cloud water if disturbed?...exct....

I just did my 150G Freshwater in sand and so far it's been hard. I used playsand and it clouds and lifts a lot. Keeping the tank clean has been impossible. Once it gets cleaned up it's better, but if you can find a sand with a thicker granular I'd highly recommend it.

+1 pool filter sand. Have it in my 75g and 125g, love it!

I hate sand. If you have fish that dig, it gets over everything. Fish spit it in the filter. You can scratch the glass if you pick up some sand in your cleaning implement while cleaning the glass.
